That's a gorgeous '76 SG there. The white with ebony really pops!
Back to the original question, In '73 / early '74 the fretboards were bound and rosewood. After that they went to unbound ebony like yours. It's not the best photo but I think the guitar ronniejackjones posted has rosewood...
At a glance, to me it looks like a '73 SG Standard. I think in '74 they moved the bridge pickup closer to the bridge but it could be early '74. The bigsby is a factory Gibson installed one that is Gibson branded. But is the arm on it broken?
A '70s strat is 3bolt79s favorite? I never would have guessed! Love that one that grain is really good for that era of strats (or any era, for that matter)!
I've had several norlins SGs, they were all heavy. That one was a little over 8 pounds. Ebony board, which was nice. The "Bigsby" was added after the fact, it was a B5 clone probably taken of some import guitar of the era (built like a tank though, which made me wonder about that). I was going...
I tried a lot of things, it got a bit better but it was inside the guitar. Open the cavity and it was like a cloud of smoke would come out of it (well, smoke stink anyway). Weird because the guitar wasn't yellowed over, the finish was like new (I even took off the pickguard to clean under it...
This was a 1974 SG Standard I had for a while. In incredible all original condition except for one problem: it reeked of smoke. Brutal.
It was too much, my wife was losing her mind over it so I had to let it go. Someone got a good deal on it, look at that one-piece back!
I'll share my "first SG story". I had about $200 to spend in 1985ish and I went to the local used instruments place to try to get an electric guitar. I wanted a USA one because my official first electric guitar was I think Korean strat copy (because I dug Clapton and he was playing his...
Congratulations on your new SG. My first guitar was an SG because it was all I could afford but now that I'm old and can afford other guitars I just always come back to the SG. The sound, the feel ... it's special.
What style of music do you play? People think of the SG as just a rock and...
PRS is designed as a compromise. Gibson scale - 24 3/4" and fender scale length = 25 1/2" so Paul Smith said "I'll put mine in between" and he got 25". He said "Gibson radius is 12" and Fender is 9.5 so I'll go with 10". He doesn't pretend otherwise, he intentionally made it a sort of in...

Small differences in width matter but radius matters a lot more than people seem to account for. My PRS has basically the same nut width as my SG and also what they call a wide thin neck which feels to me to have about the same carve as my SG but the radius, I believe, is a big part of why it...
I bought it but didn't end up installing it in anything yet. Those extra tall pots looked like they might have been a tough fit in that particular '18 SG Special and before I really dug into it I ended up selling that guitar. Since then I haven't had another that would be a good candidate (not...
Those knobs look awfully clean for an old guitar like that. I think SG Customs of that era either had black witch hats or black speed knobs, didn't they? Easy enough to find a set an original era set if that's the case.
I am not sure, I suspect a SG Junior but I'm no expert. I will say though, Col, that the bridge is an intonatable stoptail a'la a badass bridge, not a harmonica. To my knowledge, other than that big TP-1 bridge Gibson doesn't really use that sort but they were common aftermarket swaps for the...
Here's my 2006 VOS. It's a bit darker when not in bright sunlight. But you get the idea, it has a uniform tint. The neck has that faded look, but only the neck. And I'm not even sure that's intentional, the dyes bled over to the binding and made it really, really pink (possibly the worst case...
