Pete Townshend's solo on The Seeker

Just a quick update for anyone still interested. I have refined my take on this solo and can just about play it at full speed. There are several instances of small add9 grips that are key.

Pete Townshend's solo on The Seeker

Thanks for thinking of me chilipepper. I see there are some new attempts at lessons on YT since I last looked. None of them really nail the solo. If you listen carefully to the solo in this isolated guitar recording, there are some very quirky bits. It has been nearly a year since I studied this...

    My '64 Junior

It seems unlikely that the saddle for an unwound G string should be shorter than that for the B string.

    My '64 Junior

Your 64 and mine share a history of lousy modifications. I put the vibrola back on mine for similar reasons as yours.

    Vibrola spring help!

Yes, the angle of the spring and comb changes when you string up the guitar. It will change slightly with different gauge strings.

    Vibrola spring help!

Agreed, photos would help. I found it surprising that Gibson didn't sell the vibrola as an aftermarket part when I wanted to restore my SG. I have come to the conclusion that Crazyparts is Gibson's sole supplier, and Gibson doesn't sell the part because of all the issues described here and in...

    Vibrola spring help!

Did you order the vintage version that was made for typical neck set angles seen on 1964 guitars? Is your guitar a reissue or a vintage 64? I installed the Crazyparts vibrola on my vintage 64. The comb angle is such that the high E string just barely touches the end of the comb. At first, I...

    Show me your Telecasters

I have two. The one on the left is a 50s MIM. The one on the right is a CS Nocaster.

Bigsby B7 on Gibson Sg Standard

Whatever you do, don't use a B3 like the former owner of my SG Standard did.

1968 Fender Super Reverb with enclosed back

I tried stuffing the back of a Fender Twin with insulation to cut down on the sound projected out the back. It didn't make that much difference to my ears. I remember reading that Duane Allman cut holes in the back of his Marshall cabinets to open up the sound. It seems people are always...

Adding a Maestro Vibrola to a Standard SG

I bought my 64 Standard used in 1974. The previous owner had removed the Maestro and installed a Bigsby. It was not the right Bigsby for a flat top, and he routed the body to accommodate it. I didn't like the look and because of the mounting compromise, the Bigsby was nearly unusable. I had the...

    Santana's SGs

That would be the logical explanation. There is a lot of contradictory information out there. I was not aware that SG Specials were available with that particular vibrola unit, but someone in the thread claimed to have had one. There is a lot of conflicting information about the guitar used to...

    Santana's SGs

Yes, I read that. It leaves the question up in the air. Just wondering if anyone here knew more. It seems more likely to me that the guitar was refinished in black. I did not know that the VMA-1 tremolo was available on SGs. However it got there, why remount it after installing a stop tailpiece...

    Santana's SGs

I am very familiar with footage of Carlos Santana playing his red SG with P90s at Woodstock. That SG had a stop tailpiece and the short vibrato had been moved back to make room. I recently watched a video of the Tanglewood concert from 1970. In that concert, Santana is playing a black SG, also...

Pete Townshend's solo on The Seeker

I have spend an inordinate amount of time working on this. It has become a personal challenge. I have slowed it down and some of the bits are beyond quirky. They are downright awkward to play - for me anyway. I think I am very, very close to having the notes now. But I can't play it.

Show us your Gibson SG with 5 ply wide bevel pickguard

Here is the original pickguard from my 64 Standard. The former owner installed a third P/U and trimmed the guard. The P/U was removed before I bought the guitar and the rout was covered with black plastic. I decided to install a batwing guard to cover the rout.

Pete Townshend's solo on The Seeker

A cool version! Aleksandar Živojinović threw in a few close licks but did his own thing. Evidently he doesn't like the vibrola arm flopping around.

Pete Townshend's solo on The Seeker

I recently got the urge to learn PT's solo from The Seeker. I think he played his SG Special on this track, at least it sounds like it to me. I always liked this solo and I'm curious to learn the intricacies that make him sound the way he does. I am getting very close but a few spots are...
