Welp, I'm new here, and this is my first post.
I was googling info on an SG I own just a short while ago, and ran across this site. How cool.
I've been playing guitar for over 40 years. Yup, I'm a graybeard, literally. My first =good= guitar was an early 60s SG Special. Twin soapbars, one piece bridge/tailpiece. I bought it in '67 or so for $125. Sold it a couple years later for the same price. I didn't really want to sell it, but a fellow I knew wanted it bad, and was begging me to part with it and, since I'd just bought a first-year reissue LP Custom and wasn't playing the SG much anymore, I relented. *sigh* I shoulda kept it. Shoulda kept the 'Paul, too, but that's another story. Eventually I got tired of the "no fret wonder" and sold it, and bought a '68 (or so) SG. I guess it was a Standard. Humbuckers, large pickguard. That was back in about '71. The '68 was much more fun to play than the LP, but I found myself wishing I still had that old Special. Man, those P90s where incredible.
Decades passed, and I've collected quite a few guitars over the years, but I never ran across a good enough deal on an old SG to jump on it. I'm kinda funny, I guess, but I've always liked the looks of the SG's with the small pickguard a lot more than those with the large one. And, of course, when I was looking around, almost all the ones I saw were the newer style with the larger pickguard. Never came across any with P90s. But I'll admit, I wasn't looking all that hard, either.
Then one day, probably four or five years ago, I was wandering through the local Guitar Center, and came across an SG of a type I've never seen before, hanging on the wall in the "used" section. Blue metallic. EMG pickups. Small pickguard (!) A little gold decal on the back of the headstock read "Showcase Edition." Price was right -- really right. So I bought it on the spot. I'll admit it. It was the small pickguard that hooked me.
So, anyways, here I am googling for info on my SG Showcase Edition (which, prior to tonight, I knew next to nothing about), when I get a hit on this website -- not just this website, but a page dedicated to my guitar. And there I was staring at a photo of my guitar! And I'll be dinged if it wasn't some special model that Gibson made only 250 of. Not looking to sell it, nope, no way, but it's nice to know that it has some rarity (which doesn't necessarily translate into collectibility). Gotta admit the guitar sounds nice through my Marshalls -- heck, it even sounds nice through my Crate! 8) And, of course, it plays like an SG should. Got that slim neck that I always liked so much.
Let's see if I can figure out how the image posting routine works here . . .
Yup, that seems to work.
Anyways, I'd like to offer a special "thank you!" to the owners/hosts/members of this site, without whose enthusiasm and dedication, I'm sure it wouldn't be here. Glad to have found it, and I look forward to dropping in on future occasions and hanging out for a spell.
Best,
Michael
