Hey guys, I see some serious prices going about for the Derek Trucks sig SG on Reverb.com. Are those prices accurate? I mean, the guitar used to sell new for as low as 1200$, now they're selling second hand for 2400$!

What's going on?

Yup. Supply and demand. The price history on Reverb is for actual sale prices, so it is not an illusion or anything. Next year they could double again, or drop below a grand... all depends on the market.

When Gibson makes one of these "instant Collector" guitars, they will usually limit the numbers of them. With limited numbers, the price on the aftermarket goes up for a while. *yawn ...maybe that's the mystique.

If yer a collector, you might grab one for your collection because it's a
great guitar, not because of price gouging. Put it in a glass case and
stare at it.

If you're a musician, you're better off playing (and paying for) a much more plain guitar. Celebrity signatures don't sell tickets...
YOU do/ your band does. And only if you play wall. That's what's
really important. It's all about the music you can make with it.

I'm a fan of Derek Trucks, and I'm sure that the Gibbie with his name on it is a good one. And I'm sure he'd agree that it's all about the music.
He prolly went along with Gibson making his sig guitar because it's an
honor. And he deserves a few.

One more thing: I believe Gibson built two levels of Derek Trucks SGs.
One level is the "personally signed" guitar, offered at a much higher price
and with severely limited numbers. The other is the "production" version
without Derek's own signature and made in larger numbers and for
lower prices. But numbers still limited in the interests of collectibility.

I'm also sure there are lots of fakes out there. which is why I stay away
from all this nonsense.

Thanks guys for your insights. Although it really was a good guitar, i prefer my black Standard SG with dimarzio pickups, a guitar with a neck more suitable for my hands and a lot less weight. So i sold the Derek Trucks SG for a descent price. I am going to miss it though , she was a looker!!
