In the early 90's, were there any Specials that were produced with an ebony fretboard instead of rosewood?

And if not the early 90's, was there an alternative period in which ebony might have been offered?

I am not referring to the "special faded", as I already know they come equipped with ebony...I'm strictly talking regular specials.

cool...good to be back, Mr. 6string. New board looks good, nice and snappy.

I hadn't been around for a few weeks, due to being distracted by a tele lust project. I hope I can be forgiven by you guys for cheating on my SG mistress.

what about "the SG" and the firebrand? not specials, but not standards either.

Hi Ess,
nope...I'm strictly investigating this from a Special point of view,... has anyone seen any from the early 90's with an Ebony board?

basically, I'm looking at a black (aka Ebony) Special, with what might be an Ebony board. And yes, to my eyes, its mighty dark, although from what I can see, it looks like super dark/dirty rosewood, as it doesn't have that jet-black depth that I normally associate with an ebony board.

just trying to get to the bottom of a mystery to me...

alas, knowing what gibbo are like, it wouldnt surprise me if they copped a few off. :)

yea i've seen specials from the mid 90s even with ebony fretboards.
but they're C grade ebony, not the A grade ebony found on customs.

gibson seems to have thrown ebony boards on a lot of sgs over the years. there doesn`t seem to be a whole lot of rhyme or reason to it. maybe they are using up surpluss ebony? its kind of strange because ebony isn`t a cheap wood.

My buddy had a Ferrari red Special bought in late '92 that had an ebony board. As Everdying said, it's not the great stuff (not shiny).

Keith hit it on the head, I read on the Gibson forum, and in a book some where that Gibson from time to time has alot of extra ebony they feel wasn't the quality they wanted on there customs, and now reissue customs, so to use to up some inventory they have put them on sg Specials. have one on my cream and gold special. there's some pics of it around here with my son playing it.l
