Gary always played an SG for the slide part on the opening section of Freebird. He was definitely a Gibson guy, either SGs or Les Pauls. For better or worse, he kept Skynyrd going til the end, although one could argue Skynyrd ended in a plane crash in 1977. I saw the first iteration of the reunion tour, with Jonnie Van Zant on vocals and Ed King on guitar, in the late '80s. It was a fantastic show. They even brought out Allen Collins in a wheelchair at the end of that show, which was both amazing and sad at the same time because he, along with any other guitarist in the classic line up, was frickin' a rock 'n' roll animal in their heyday. The original Skynyrd didn't make a bad album, they all swung and rocked and put out one of the greatest live albums of all time. RIP Gary, there's a loud concert going on in heaven tonight.
