Looking for a high end SG with a fat neck, what is out there (new or vintage)?

I have been enjoying my mid 2000's SG Classic a lot. Now I am looking for another SG with a fat neck. I am selling a few guitars and pedals and want to get a really nice SG. I really want block inlays and a small pickguard. I am willing to spend up to about $3,000 for the right guitar, less is ok as well. What can I look at? Not worried about buying a players guitar if it is a good one. Dings and dents don't bother me. I am all about playability and tone.

Off the top of my head, the Iommi SG Special ticks all of your boxes, except for the inlays. Outside of that, a used Custom Shop 64 Standard Reissue, if you can find one in that price range. I think your main hurdle is the combination of fat neck and small pickguard.

If you can source a 2011 Junior they have a chunky neck and a higher placed body / neck joint from the 1966-70 models. I got one recently and fitted a neck PU to it. Lovely guitar. 87998-1-big.jpg

My 64 Reissue SG Standard has a neck that measures about 0.88" at the first fret and 0.98" at the 12th. It's a brilliant neck, although it doesn't feel "fat" per se. I have other guitars that feel fatter due to the profile of the neck. The 64 has what I would call soft shoulders, so even though it fills the hand, it doesn't feel overly clunky to me. Great neck!

Edit: just realized you've stated the budget of $3k. Not sure if you can get one for that much currently.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Keep them coming. I am realizing maybe it might take a larger amount of cash.

I’ve been on the lookout for a used 1964 RI for a while because I love fat necks on my SGs- I haven’t seen one under $3k yet. Over budget, but there is an open box 61/59 Fat Neck custom shop SG at GC right now. $3600. Here’s the link: https://www.guitarcenter.com/Blemis...-Faded-Cherry-194744818165-L66184005004008.gc

I personally bought myself one of these 61/59 Fat Necks for Xmas- I paid $4060 new and had it shipped to my sister where there is no sales tax. I went new in order to get a longer financing offer, but it was HARD to get them to do financing and a discount.

Other than these two custom shop models- the only small guard SGs I can think of is the occasional Gibson SG Standard 61- they typically aren’t huge like a Classic- but sometimes they might be like .88-.93. That’s way smaller than the .92-1.0 that is likely on your Classic, but there just isn’t a budget small guard Gibson USA model that has a true 50s neck I don’t think…

I almost purchased the Custom Shop 61 Standard w/ the 59 neck from Guitar Center (Musicians Friend also), but I decided that the neck was too thick. That's probably your best source.

The one I almost purchased was in Kerry Green. I know MF had them new in TV Yellow and a couple other finishes.

2010, 2011 and 2012 SG Standard has a medium C neck profile, close to 50' s neck.

YO SKELT, I had wanted to reply to your recent comment you made about the Flying V w/In-Line Knobs, and cant find the thread......so...hope you don't mind the up-date....here........since you mentioned the 1998 Model I have gone on Safari looking.....and aside from the normal 'JUNGLE OUT THERE' type of routine I encountered.....I have yet to see a single frikkin one ! and I really did not think that that 3 in a row knob placement would be the kind of guitar spec that gets horded, so maybe GIBSON just did not make a whole lot of them? and right now the only guitar that the 3 in-a-row in-line tone/volume knobs come on new is the $10,000.00 CUSTOM shop model and it might as well be $20,000.00 coz I am not springing $10K on any FLYING FRIKKIN V......

If I recall the SG faded model from the mid 2000s had a chunky neck.

I know it is not an SG,. But Carlos Santana liked wide far necks if I recall. My PRS Santana 2 had one.

Just as @Icw said, the mid 2000's SG Special Faded has a very fat neck, yet I know you are looking for more aesthetic upgrades (inlays, etc).

I have an early 2000's SG Classic as well and would say it is my most comfortable neck. Comparing the two;

SG Classic (Comfortable D Shape) nice depth yet easy to transition up sides when rolling hand
SG SFaded (Fat rounded C shape) almost too fat but fun to play/fight. Makes my thin 80's MIJ necks a breeze to play afterwards.
