New pickguard, yay or nay ?

Hey all,

It is snowing here, I am bored, so I am contemplating (and playing too) my 2018 SG Special.

I've been wondering if I want to swap the kinda boring stock black 1-ply pickguard for a 3 (bwb) or 5 ply one ?

I am tempted to get a 3 ply. What do you think ?

They do look really nice, basically if that is the look you want there is really no downside to consider.

I think that would dress-up your Special quite nicely! As @Go Nigel Go said, no downside to consider (other than the cost of a new pickguard). If you don't like the multi ply as well, just put the stock back on.

Buy both - 3ply and 5ply
You will get 4 options - stock, 3 ply, 5ply and no pickguard. You can chose between any of the options, any time you like

Honestly, a 5-ply always looks right to me. Really classes the guitar up

I would keep the single ply as goes with the theme of the guitar. I think a 5-ply would stick out like a sore thumb.

WOW, did you take the covers off of the Mini's ? I've never seen a Mini-Humbucker w/out a cover ! and I cant tell for sure, but it looks like the Bridge saddles are nylon ? WOWO !

I didn’t take the covers off.

I never bonded with the stock über hot minis…

These are mini-PAFs by Zhangbucker pickups. I custom ordered them with a zebra pattern. Awesome pickups, sound like real PAFs, but mini humbuckers sized.

The saddle are stock, not nylon… might be the lighting ?

Right, I've a set of Hi-Output Mini's in a FIREBIRD from 2018 and they don't quite grab me...I wanted to swap 'em out for P-90's but can't because of the way they are mounted.
ZHANGBUCKER, HUH ? Bet they crank, eh ? Real PAF sound from a Mini-Hummer ! HOT DAM !

Finally, my 5ply pickguard arrived today.

I have to say that it indeed looks "classy" with it .

To me your SG has a 70's vibe to it, and with the block fret markers which to me lends itself to the single ply black.
