Scored an SG what model is it?

So I just scored this SG but I don't know what it is exactly? It's a 2012 model came w/the Gibson USA hard-shell case w/white interior. It's in unplayed condition still had the plastic on the the pickguard. No case candy. You can smell the nitro finish from 10 feet away. Mint condition case queen! Seller was asking $700 and that's what I paid for it. Anyone know what model it is?

Actually, I'd say it is an SG Standard Limited to be exact. The color is probably Aged Cherry. Pickups are 490R/498T. The answers to all your questions are most likely here:

As others have pointed out it is a Standard SG.

Not counting modified or special limited editions (also discontinued editions), you can always count on the fretboard inlays to clue you in on a specific model type.

Juniors/Specials/Classics = Dots
Standards = Trapezoid
Custom = Block

Yours appears to be the basic (standard) specs for that particular model guitar... plastic kluson tuners, full guard, covered pickups, flashy top hat knobs, etc.

You can always contact Gibson support with the serial number and they will tell you the specs it left the factory with to see if anything has been changed/upgraded.

I think you nailed it TY!! So I Did some investigating and the guitar does have a slightly narrower headstock, it has MOP Gibson & Crown inlay, it has 5 ply batwing guard, it has Klusen tuners, it has circuit board electronics. The biggest tell is the fretboard I looked at it w/a magnifying glass and I have never seen anything like it before! The specs from thee wiki page says its 'baked maple' (never heard of that) from a distance it looks like its probably ebony or maybe a dark rosewood. Under magnification you cant any discernable grain patterns? Anyway awesome detective work guys!!

BTW this guitar when taken out of the case has that amazing smell! IDK if its the nitro finish or what but it smells so good!! I have only smelled this smell one other time and that's when my bro bought a brand new Les Paul

Fresh nitro has an unpleasant chemical smell. The vanilla scent is from the case that gets absorbed into the nitro finish of the guitar.

Welcome to ETSG... I don't usually insult anyone. *grins

When your SG Standard was new, Gibson had just been raided by federal agents
who confiscated a lot of Gibson's tropical wood... such as Ebony and Rosewood.
Gibson had been sourcing these woods from dicey third world nations with
unstable political situations... such as Madagascar.

Consequently, the wood was confiscated on suspicion of it being illegal imports.
Gibson's engineers and factory managers had prepared for such an occurrence,
or for some other interruption in the sourcing of tone wood, so they were able to
switch over to "Baked Maple" for fretboards and keep their production going
...AND keep their employees employed.

The reaction from guitarists was scathing. Guys on guitar fora, including this one
were all over Gibson, they were mad about being charged Gibson prices and not
getting the traditional Rosewood... for a while it was all "WTF Gibson!"
All that negativity turned out to be nonsense, as it usually is. Baked maple is a
fine substitute, as I can attest from personal experience.
Also, one by one... as guitarists on this forum started actually playing the guitars in
question, the consensus turned around to grudging approval. I don't know if anyone
EVER admitted baked maple was okay over on MLP. I doubt it.

Personally I thought the baked maple was a great idea. Why not use North American
wood instead of contributing to the destruction of tropical forests everywhere.
I thought, "I'll support that..."
So I bought one. My lady and I watched the price go down and down as Gibson
responded to lack of sales by marking the instruments down. I pounced when I couldn't
stand the suspense any more. So I ended up getting an excellent 2012
SG special for just over $600. I've owned that instrument for nine years now and
am still head over heels for it.

Mine is pretty special, as SG specials go. It's a '70s tribute (not a replica) so it's got the '70s style oversize headstock,
with volute...
it's got a pair of new design mini-hum buckers, it sports a satin silver burst finish and '70s style block inlays. Also it
has the baked maple fretboard.

This was NOT a popular model, so I ended up getting an excellent Gibson at a very good price.
Maybe you did too.
There were way too many innovations and unusual features on this one for your normal guitarist, who expects Gibson
to keep with tradition. But I loved it instantly. And I still do. It sounds unique which is what I wanted, and the mini hums rip.

Ten years later, the baked maple fretboard has given no trouble, and it's hard and smooth and looks great
and the tone is excellent and it's easy to play. That's my review. Treat it with Fret Doctor and it will darken up nicely.
I like mine a lot. Gibson caught so much flak from every side over the baked maple, they discontinued it after they
reached some 'understanding' with the feds, paid their fine and got their wood back. So they only made guitars with
baked maple fretboards for one year.

And now you have one.

This was a warm reddish brown when new. Fret doctor is a good treatment for baked maple, if you like it darker.
I'm sure it works quite well as issued.

WOW, you got a 2012 SG Standard w/no fret wear for $700...NICE ONE !!! You done real good for yourself...Peeps around where I am lately are selling used SG Standards (on local CL ) for more than what they went for when they were new!!! $1,100 AND UP IS WHAT I'm seeing today at quick glance on local CL pages....

oh yeah, one more innovation that Gibson did with my 2012 SG special
(and MAYBE with your 2012 SG Standard).... .... .... a MAPLE neck.
--You'd have to look up the specs for the 2012 SG Standard to see if they
used a maple neck on that model. SGs (and most other Gibbies) are made
traditionally with mahogany necks. *shrugs

For me, this is an excellent upgrade. I've played Fender Bass since 1972
and so the maple neck idea is not new to me. Gibson enthusiasts often act
like the maple neck is a new thing to THEM. nonsense!

The maple neck on my SG special is rigid and feels great.
It stays in tune really well, as many Fender guitars do.
If your SG Standard is made with a maple neck, you can expect better
tuning stability. Some say you can expect more Fender-like brightness
but I think this is horse-feathers...

Use yer tone controls, and get the tone you want.

Spec sheet says neck is
1-pc quartersawn Honduran Mahogany

I just checked and it doesnt have the little scabbe4d on pieces on either side of the headstock
