Hi....just joined....my first post....please don't bite!
If this is in the wrong place or this topic has been covered before, please let me know.
So, I remember an SG a friend had many moons back and I'm fairly sure it had the word standard on the truss rod cover?
Did Gibson put "standard" on their SGs? Was it just Les Pauls?
Any experts out there?
There seem to be two versions of the word standard, one very scripty and one that looks very chunky.

Welcome to ETSG!

Some of our members know a lot about SG history... they'll prolly
be along soon. In the meantime I have me this book by Tony Bacon
"The SG Guitar book"

Highly recommended. Lots of great photos of our favorite instrument.

Some of the earliest SGs said "Les Paul" on the TRC.
Later on they were often blank. Sometimes they said "SG" on them.
In the '70s some of them said "Firebrand" and some said "The SG"
I think mostly the TRC is blank. Standards, Customs, Supremes...
lots of those are blank. The next most common one is "SG."
Motley Crue had their logo on one model, and Tony Iommi had his
signature on the TRC of his model. I know Gibson made an SG specially
for women, it said "Goddess" on the TRC.

Those Goddess models are really cool guitars. I was always tempted to
buy one, but I never did. *shrugs

Here's a link to Philadelphia Luthier Supply... you can get a TRC that
says anything you want on it.

My own personal SGs have custom TRC made by Scott Swirski of Canada.
Here's a link to his website:

Mine look like this:
Luna Headstock front@100.jpeg

Headstock@100.jpg
These are ebony wood with abalone and MOP inlays. They look great on a plain
headstock. My SGs are both specials.

Stewart Macdonald also sells Gibson style TRCs that say Standard
if you want one.

My 2018 SG Standard 61 came with the thick "SG" Truss cover, and Kidney button locking Grovers.. so I put on the "Standard" Truss cover, it is in fine script , not like the 90's Les Paul Logo style. Plus I tossed on some chrome tulips as i can't stand kidney buttons lol

I have to thank Papagayo, Col Mustard, Piper68special and Carrion for thier interesting contributions. Thanks! My SG manual is by Paul Balmer butI will look out for the Tony Bacon one. It does look like Papagayo is right in saying there were blank, sg, les paul and not much else on the covers.

My reason, if you are at all interested: My friend had an SG and I used to play it at his house. We were young and stupid and had such a great time. Recently I bought a 2016 which is identical to my friend's thus recreating the vibe. I was pretty sure it said " Standard " on the TRC , but it had a repair and this may have been put on at the time.

The tulips look good. Mine came wiith "plastic" tulips and wouldn't stay in tune so I put on a set of Kluson locking tuners wirh the same tulips. I really like the ability to change a string fast.

Thank you all once again.
