I've pondred on buying a Mooer Black Secret, Rat clone, that both got vintage and turbo mode, cause I really like the tones I've heard from various demos of it on YouTube, but don't think I am actually going to get one anyway, cause I actually really come to love the high gain distortion tone I get out of my Joyo Orange Juice (which is a down-sized and down-shaved clone of the now discontinued Tech 21 Oxford, Orange like preamp pedal, with analog speaker emulation) set to kind of medium overdrive, though it, as it is quite pick sensitive, goes into more of a high gain overdrive when playing chords, feed into my Behringer GDI21 (Tech 21 GT2 preamp pedal, that emulated either a Fender, Marshall or Mesa Boogie type preamp, with analog speaker emulation), set to the California (Mesa Boogie), Clean (which still has a lot of gain), and Center position (mic placement emulation), settings.

Gives me a really thick, heavy distortion, with some fuzz-esque qualities, and with a really nice raunchy crunch to it thanks to the Orange Juice overdrive that is feed into the GDI21.

You can hear it in this sound test from the 11:27 to 12:19 mark (recorded through my Peavey Solo Special SS combo amp's clean channel, mic'ed up with a tube condenser microphone in front of it. And finger picking.):

I was pondering similar.

I have a ds1, joyo ud and muff.

The ds1 and joyo are kind of the same, kind of ok with some annoying qualities, still good.

I tried a rat and preferred my joyo for low gain, the mooer rat seems nice with the two modes. Maybe if I spent some time with a rat pedal..

I tend to use a Duncan Lava box that I love, and strangely enough, and I am sure someone will fall out of their seat.... I like the gain on my.... amp! (GASP!!!) (Original Roland Blues cube.)

I have a Joyo Sweet Baby that gives me a nice mild OD like grain. Apart from that, it's the Vox or Super Champ XD gain knobs.

I usually run my amp gain up a bit and use a tube screamer basically as a clean boost. That really brings out the character from my amp. If I'm looking for something heavier, JHS Angry Charlie. They say it's inspired by the drive channel on the JCM800. Whatever it is, it sounds incredible. From subtle overdrive to full saturation. It can get very heavy but still retain some clarity.

It surprises me how this doesn't seem to be the norm. I don't use any OD or distortion pedals as I much prefer to get it from my amp. That's the main selling point for me when amp shopping, a nice overdriven tone that can go from light crunch to 70's heavy rock. My Laney GH30R does it very well. I'll often use fuzz pedals, but that's something different then what an amp will do, and a boost pedal here and there for a slightly different flavour or additional levels of gain.

For straight-up distortion I use a Rat 2. It's an '87 or '88 don't remember, had it for ever.

Sorry, I don't have anything useful to contribute. Yet, your post got me to visit the Joyo homepage.

Never really paid attention to Mooer or Joyo and I have No experience with either of the brands. I considered them cheap junk or rip offs .....

There is some interesting stuff. Here are a couple of items .....

For me? I like drive stacking. Two low-medium gain overdrives stacked (one typically being Klon-flavored, other depends on the mood) to get the distortion sound I’m after.

I like stacking too. This is my current stack and it is awesome

I'm happy with stacking too! Clean boost (on leads) into a EHX Glove Od (fulltone OCD like overdrive) into a DIY Black Arts Pharaoh Fuzz (Ram'head big muff inspired) clone into a DIY EarthQuaker Device Speaker Crancker clone
I've got these gain pedals stacked, set to low to medium gain, and they run into a pushed amp (Quilter Pro Block 200), and I love the tone I get out of it.
Depends on the guitar pickups too...
