I picked this gibson/baldwin sg up at a local music store recently for 80 bucks. Anyone ever heard of them? it plays and sounds pretty good. had a graphite nut put on it. just needs some fret work to be just right. I know its not a real sg, but it looks pretty good for a cheap one and ive always wanted an sg.

Welcome. Yes, Baldwin is/was a sub-brand of Gibson, so it is a "real" SG. Enjoy!

Thanks i appreciate that. see, i was told it was a chinese gibson. i got it for a steal. I beleive a guitar doesnt have to be expensive to be great. my 120.00 les paul special p90 is picked over my fender strat almost every time.

Fck it, if it looks like an SG, plays like and SG and sounds like an SG - it's an SG. And as usual; if chicks don't know the difference - who cares? Enjoy the easy access and kick ass look. You can make it sound as good as you like so I wouldn't worry about that.

This seems like a good deal.. I have never put in new frets myself but have leveled plenty.. and leveling NEW frets and giving the old ones a quick level to improve playability can be quite different. I find the radius blocks are better for sanding fretboards without frets.. and for getting older frets back to normal just making sure to tap them in and look for high spots.. use a fret rocker to mark with a sharpie all the high areas you find.. keep in mind if a fret is high it is not always high the entire length of the fret.. I like to avoid sanding off too much fret material.. this beam looks great and decent price.. Stewmac is always a good source.. but I purchased a KATANA (no, not the amp) leveling beam where you level the frets while under string tension.. it is narrow, it slips under the strings, and even has a truss rod to imitate the neck relief.. very cool system.. very easy to level frets where you only need to touch up a few areas.. the little bone crowning device is easy to use as well.. I have used this on a bunch of my budget guitars and makes a world of difference.. and you dont grind off more wire than you need.. not cheap as it was designed in Italy but made in Japan..

You can have a look here.. depends on how much you plan to use it.. I love this thing
.. also works with the strings off on a straight neck.. so either way.. its narrow and grinds only what you need off..

RECTIFYMASTER.COM (sorry had a us rep, this site is full offerings)

have a look.. great tool in my opinion.. I made an $ 88 Eiphone LP special I with P90's play as well as a Gibby $ 1000.. a neck shim was needed of course, as well as decent tuners.... STEWMAC for that..

I bought one years ago just for the hell of it & because they did look so surprisingly cool. The frets on mine were really bad also & rendered the guitar unplayable / undesirable / unusable for my purposes but I decided just to keep it anyway.

Then, one of my kids wanted to start playing guitar so I figured I'd level that crazy fret job & give em that guitar to learn on. Once I started I just could not believe the severity of what I had to deal with to have a correct level fret line. I almost entered Fretless-Wonder territory man!

OK, I'm exaggerating but hotdam those frets were just gawdawful outta whack!
Obviously this was one of the more serious problems with this era Baldwin SG.

Good insight. Yeah these frets are crazy,I've gotten it playable but not great. Still waiting on my leveling beam. Did a 50s style wiring job to it last night.thumbnail is before large is after. Had tons of cold solder joints and a horrible buzz

There certainly was a lot of unnecessary extra wiring before you worked on it. I'd be surprised if that was original huh? I just can't see waste like that being allowed in one of these tight-assed shops. I'd almost expect the thinnest cheapest wire that would work without an inch extra being wasted!

But hey, how about those 3 shims used to (I guess) level the control cavity?? Boy o boy...

man, before i rewired it it would still buzz with the volume off. the wires were conductive. i could hover my hand near the output jack and it would change...kinda like a theremin!
and yeah those shims are great arent they? oh well for 80 bucks and some extra work maybe i can make a player out of her. the caps were wired to the tone pots only, so im not understanding what they did there, you should see the pile of thin wires i pulled out of there.

that katana leveler looks good, but a little rich for my blood, the rmlite looks pretty awesome though. i need to get a good fret hammer to try to reseat a couple of the frets before i level them. thanks so much for the advice. ive got a epi lp special p90 in worn tv yellow. shes a killer machine. Yes, the Katana fret leveler is pricey.. but for as many budget guitars i play around with it has paid over time. LOVE the TV yellow Special.. I bought my Epi Special NOS form guitar center for $ 88.. the neck shim 0.5 degree.. and budget STEWMAC sealed tuners really helped.. the action is crazy low now and those EPI P-90's rock like no other.. cant believe it really.. let us know how the beam goes.. rather than placing SHARPIE marks all over the frets.. I just marked the high spots.. to make sure i go them without grinding too much off.. oh.. after the crowing job.. a dremel buffer with med and fine compound does a fantastic job on the frets after going over it with micromesh paper..

one last thing.. how do you like that classic 30 combo? I was looking for a classic 20 MH for my clean stuff.. they have some great options on that MH.. my marshalls and splawn get enough use.. I need to get some nice chimey cleans..
