My number one fear is noise. I may end up buying noiseless P-90s to compensate if I get a Classic SG. A shame because Wolfetone has some killer pickups and people rave about his P-90s which are not noiseless. :(

If you've ever had an indoor TV aerial, and had to
move your body around and turn the aerial to get
a picture, then you know everything there is to know
about solving the P90 noise issue.

Except that that is what Les Pauls started with - the first gold tops had 2 P90's. And a bad neck angle!

Corrected that for you :naughty:

LP's with P-90s are awesome in the fact that they have a deep, lovely voice.
SG's with P-90s sound flatter, more direct.
Try both, that's the only method to make up your mind.

Played some more today. P-90s are not for me. Much prefer humbuckers, but I can see the charm in the neck position.

OK, who did you listen to then? You can't have been listening to any bands from planet Earth!
There's a hell of a lot of guitarists that use, or have used guitars equipped with P90s.
Here's just a few:

Robby Krieger - The Doors
Frank Zappa - Mothers of Invention
Tony Iommi - Black Sabbath
Pete Townshend - The Who
Carlos Santana - Santana
Johnny Thunders - New York Dolls
Mick Jones - The Clash
Steve Jones - The Sex Pistols
Paul McCartney - The Beatles (on his Epiphone Casino)
Billie-Joe Armstrong - Green Day

I'm sure there's many more. Thats just 2 minutes worth of research...

Haha! You are so dead on. I stand corrected. I initially was into bands like Rush, Led Zep, Deep Purple, Maiden, lots of metal, etc. I know Page used P-90s at times. Yep, I am a Black Sabbath fan, The Clash, The Sex Pistols, and Green Day. Not a fan of any of those other artists and bands, however. Just like single coils, P-90s would be a small part of my playing so it would be nice to spend as little as possible. Maybe a used LP Junior.

Freddie King played clean on a P-90 Goldtop for a very long time, so the style and tone no doubt is versatile.

Leslie West and Martin Barre also. Aqualung was recorded with P-90s on a 58 Jr. etc.

Long list for sure.

Some guy from Texas and ancient history who Clapton hung around with so he could actually learn how to play Blues.

There is nothing wrong with sticking with humbuckers if that's what you like. All of those early Phil X/Fretted Americana video made me want an SG with P-90's.

Do you have a source for that info?

I think Clapton could already play the blues. However, I found this on Wikipedia, which may be the "source" the previous poster used:

King performed alongside the big rock acts of the day, such as Eric Clapton[21] and for a young, mainly white audience, along with white tour drummer Gary Carnes for three years, before signing to RSO. In 1974 he recorded Burglar, for which Tom Dowd produced the track "Sugar Sweet" at Criteria Studios in Miami, with guitarists Clapton and slide guitarist George Terry, drummer Jamie Oldaker and bassist Carl Radle. Mike Vernon produced all the other tracks.[22]

If I was asked, I would always cite Buddy Guy as E.C.'s
early blues influence, and it can still be heard in his playing today.
